Zeolites for water filtration

Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral, a microporous substance made of crystalline solids of aluminum silicate. Zeolites have very interesting characteristics: high porosity, lightness, high cation exchange capacity (CSC), high adsorption and filtering capacity. Zeolites are formed naturally, but they can also be modified or newly synthesized in the lab to obtain new properties.

The very small cavities present on the zeolites allow small molecules to easily pass through and get trapped in them. This makes it an efficient, non-toxic and eco-friendly choice for water filtration applications. They can be applied in water filtration systems to capture organic or inorganic contaminants (such as heavy metals) from contaminated ground- or superficial water. Zeolites can remove hydrocarbons, ammonia, nitrates and phosphates, oils and many other compounds.

For this application, it is possible to use both zeolites in pure form as an adsorbing agent or chemically modified zeolites as a selective filter for specific molecules or elements.

Zeolites can be used in different grain sizes for different applications:

– as an adsorbing agent, it is used for physical retention of organic and inorganic contaminants.

– as a filtering agent, in its chemically pure form, it is used for the removal of Cs+, Pb2+, NH4+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and other cations.

– as a filtering agent, in its chemically modified forms, it is used for more selective filtration of other heavy metals (Fe, Mn,..), anionic species (As, Cr, F-, Cl-,..) and organic molecules.
